Picture of the Week Toei Uzumasa Eigamura, Kyoto, Japan

The Toei Uzumasa Eigamura also called Kyoto Studio Park and Toei Movie Land is a film set and theme park all in one, it is located a short distance from Kyoto. It features a collection of replicas of traditional Japanese building which are used as settings for historical movies and TV dramas. It is an amazing place with whole streets depicting Edo Period town scenes, a replica of the old Nihonbashi Bridge, a traditional court house and a Meiji Period police box. Actual shooting takes place occasionally, and visitors are more than welcome to observe the action. You can also catch various performances, visit a haunted house, large souvenir shop and exhibitions about the popular TV series. One of my favourite things to do there is to dress up as a character and get photographed, you can choose from such things as samurai, ninja and geisha.

This is my entry for This Week's Show Me Japan

  1. This sure sounds like a fun place. I wanted to visit it, but the ticket prices were a bit high for our budget conscious family.XD

Did you wear a Ninja/Samurai outfit there? ;p

  2. Hi Lina,

Its a fun place and really interesting. I went there with my family when they visited Japan from Australia and dressed up as a Samurai with the wig and all.

  5. Thanks Lina, it was cool walking around for a day all dressed up, but only because of the surroundings and everyone dressed up around me.

Thanks Sofi, It is a fun place.

  6. Cool! Sounds like those wild west towns back hope where they restage famous shootouts a few times a day and period actors walk around speaking in the appropriate historical dialect.

Looks like fun and thanks for the comment on my site!

  8. Thanks Chris,

It is a fun place with lots to do and creates a feeling like you are actually in that period of time.

    Thanks Ri,

It is a great place and worth dressing up for the fun and experience.

  9. Wow! What a fun place! Even though it is not an authentic town, the 'see-believe' principle would make for a great experience! When I am there next, I would definitely check it out:)

  13. We had a great day here with our friends from Kyoto. The Loch Ness Monster was a hoot! And we thought it was very funny when we had our photo taken with the Samurai, they brought out their own camera to have their photo taken with the Australian tourists!

  14. Thanks rObfOs, Yeah it is a great spot just outside of Kyoto that a lot of tourists miss. I love all the character dress ups you can do and some of the shows on offer. That would have been a great laugh with the samurai :)

  15. Yes J-A, it was funny and the shows were very entertaining. Our friend Kazuhiko also took us around to the Treasure Hall at Koryu-ji Temple, which backs onto Toei to see the First Designated Treasure of Japan, the statue of "Miroku Bosatsu". Kazuhiko-san is a teacher of Japanese Culture. He often takes his students to Toei, so he was our guide for the day and his daughter Haruka was our interpreter. Lucky us!
