Visiting The Tokyo Skytree

The new Tokyo Skytree offers unsurpassed views of Tokyo and is a must see on your next visit to the city. The Skytree opening last month was eagerly awaited and it has already gone on to become one of the biggest attractions in Japan. Tokyo is a city awash with modern skyscrapers, but they are all eclipsed by the Skytree, which at 634 meters dominates the city skyline.

The Skytree is the world’s tallest free standing tower and has two public observatories at 350 meters and 450 meters offering 360 degree views of the city. On a clear day you can see everything including the beautiful Mount Fuji.

The structure was inspired by Japanese pagoda architecture. The Skytree is also conveniently located in the heart of downtown Tokyo, near Asakusa, which is a major tourist area.

Tickets until July 10th have already been allocated via an online lottery system.

Key Information about Tokyo Skytree:

Hours: 8:00 am – 10:00 pm
Open: Daily
Entry Fee: 2000 yen (USD$26) to visit the first deck and an additional 1000 yen for the second deck
Note: From July 11th tickets can be bought on the day

  1. After the July 10th, you can buy tickets freely and more people will come the tower. I think that I'll visit the tower next year. :)

    1. Thanks Cocomino, Yes, from July 11th tickets can be bought on the day and no more online lottery system. Next year sounds like a good time and hopefully the crowds are not as extreme then.

  3. I read that just after the first weekend (after opening), a total of 1,4 million people had already visited the tower. Heaven knows what the current total is.

No, believe it or not, but I haven't been yet. Too scared of those crowds. I'm admiring it from afar. ^^

    1. Thanks Rurousha, It is fast on its way to being the number one attraction in Japan. A lot of buzz at the moment but should die down after a period of time. Can't climb the tree unless you have a ticket, which are in hot demand. Hopefully after July 11th you will have a better chance, so I would wait until then.

    2. I'm determined to wait until autumn when we have bright, clear, cobalt-blue skies. Though I think Cocomino's choice is the wisest: wait till next year! ;)

    3. Hi Rurousha, Waiting is best for now and agree that Autumn with clear blue skies would be the best time to see the Skytree. I will probably see it in Jan 2013 :)

  4. I remember reading about this being built a few years back and it's finally here. 2,000 yen is a bit pricey though. It it worth it? I'll be visiting Tokyo in August so maybe I'll take a look from a distance. I don't like crowds too much!

    1. Thanks Ben, It has been on the Tokyo skyline for a while now, but has only recently been opened to the public. I think it is definitely worth it for the experience and amazing views over Tokyo. The Skytree is also really cool to spot from a distance all over Tokyo and makes for some great photos.

  5. It was fun looking around the stores and restaurants even though I couldn't get a ticket to go up yet. :-)
