Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games Bid

Tokyo on Saturday formally announced its bid to host the 2020 Olympics. Japan’s Olympic Committee sees the bid as a symbol of Japan’s determination to recover from the devastating March 11 earthquake and tsunami. Tokyo, which hosted Asia’s first Olympics in 1964, lost out to Rio de Janeiro in the race to host the 2016 Olympics. The 1964 Tokyo Olympics was where Japan was able to show the world how much Japan had recovered from the disaster of the second World War. The Olympic Committee wants to make the 2020 games a similar symbol of recovery from the major disasters Japan has recently suffered.

What do you think? Is this games bid a vital component to Japan road to recovery?

  2. Good luck to Japan... and lets face it, Japan most probably needs to have some good news, and impetus for change. I'm not sure however that the Japan brand has recovered enough yet. Having said that... the jubilation on winning the Women's world cup is good evidence of how positive these things have a way of supporting the people that have suffered so much.

The only thing I would say is that Japan has to be a little worried about how the Olympics can be a money spinner

  3. Thank you Lina, Tokyo will certainly be a busy place come 2020!

Thank you Ben, hope Japan gets it as it will be more good news to go with the FIFA women's World Cup win earlier today. It will be very uplifting for the people of Japan and would help with the tourist dollar that has taken a dip recently.

  7. Though if Beijing Olympics is any comparison, visa requirements for countries not exempted from it to enter Japan will be tougher during the Olympics.

There was no income or savings requirement needed as proof for Malaysians but during the months leading to the Olympics, the visa application process got tougher and applicants needed to have a minimum of RM2K to show in their accounts.

Japan currently requires a minimum of RM6K for Malaysian applicants, so I wonder how much would we need to show if Tokyo hosts the game in 2020. :(
