Takayama (高山市) located in the mountainous Hida region of Gifu Prefecture in Japan is famous for its beautifully preserved old town. Takayama has managed to retain its traditional charm with its traditional inns, shops and sake breweries.
Takayama in Winter is a white wonderland with snow and ice dominating its landscape. It is my favourite time of year to visit the city. I love staying at a traditional Japanese ryokan (traditional Japanese inn) soaking in one of the many onsens (hot springs) in the mountains above Takayama and feasting on the world famous Hida beef from the region.
This Week’s Picture of the Week is the amazing snow and ice landscape of Takayama during Winter.
I did a project on Takayama when I was in high school for Japanese class!! I really want to visit here!! I really love preserved old towns ♥ looks like such a beautiful beautiful place! (;;)
Thanks エミリー❤, It is an amazing place and would be my favourite place to visit in Japan with Kyoto. It is a traditional city known for its traditional architecture and crafts.
Thanks Lina, I actually don't mind the cold because I have hot onsen and nabe to comfort me as well as warm sake :)
Hi Japan Australia, I love your blog and all your destination ideas. It would be really good to have a map and a pinpoint for all these marvelous places as I have to get my books out to work out where in Japan they are. We are visiting Osaka & Kyoto in December and I keep looking at your site for travel ideas (I will keep checking your blog after we return too as I just love it all).
Thank you rObfOs for your kind words. I love your idea about a map to pinpoint the destinations. I'll have to see what I can do. Osaka and Kyoto are two of my favourite places in Japan. If possible, try and sneak a day or two in Nara and Kobe, which are also close by as they are amazing places :)
Awesome capture !!!! Its just so beautiful ! We are planning to visit Takayama and Shirakawa-go in a week or so..was just wondering would it be better during the night illumination at Shirakawa-go or anytime in winter is fine ? Thank u :)
Thanks Aame, Love this place in Winter, Autumn, Spring and Summer. Takayama and Shirakawa-go are beautiful in each of the seasons in a different way. I love the white wonderland in winter, but the green in summer is also awesome. It can get pretty cold in winter and depending on the amount of snow they also can close the roads.

ReplyDeleteThose winter photos are awesome. I'd love to experience such winter wonderland someday, but I don't know whether I can stand the cold.

I would love to see some of those old houses with snow on them. I should book a trip.
ReplyDeleteThanks Sixmats, It's a must see place in Japan and I can highly recommend it. Hope you get the chance to check it out one day :)
