KFC Colonel Crispy Potato Chips

KFC Colonel Crispy Chicken flavoured Potato Chips are a collaboration between Japanese snack maker Calbee and KFC. Calbee has long been our favourite Japanese snack maker, famous for their jyagariko potato sticks and light crispy potato chips. These potato chips are flavoured to taste like a piece of the Japanese original Colonel Crispy Chicken that is sold at KFC stores in Japan. It is basically a crispy boneless chicken strip with a hint of garlic and soy sauce.

They went on sale at convenience stores across Japan on January 6 and other stores from January 13, and will be available for a limited time. The potato chips sell for 148 yen (USD$1.48).

The package features the famous logo of Colonel Sanders on the front, while the back of the package has a discount coupon. The coupon can be used to receive a piece of the Colonel Crispy Chicken for 140 yen instead of the usual price of 170 yen. It is valid until March 23, which is not a bad spot of marketing if you ask me.

How Do They Taste?

Pretty good! The smell of fried chicken hits you straight away as you open up the bag. There is a generous amount of chips and the chicken flavour is spot on. It really does taste like a piece of the Colonel’s Crispy Chicken.

KFC Corn Potage Fritter

KFC Japan has just released a new item to its menu, the Corn Potage Fritter. It went on sale on September 5th across the country. Corn Potage is a very popular soup in Japan that is thick and creamy. It is served at most restaurants and cafes and can even be found in vending machines during the colder months. Corn Potage also seems to be a flavour of the moment here in Japan and can be found in everything from snacks to ice-cream. KFC has taken this Japanese favourite one step further by serving it deep-fried. Yes, that’s right deep-fried! The Corn Potage Fritter is crispy on the outside while soft and creamy on the inside.

How do KFC do it?

Kentucky Chicken Rice Sandwich

The Kentucky Chicken Rice Sandwich went on sale at KFC in Japan on February 7th. The bun less sandwich features ketchup rice, cheddar cheese special tomato sauce, and special mayonnaise sandwiched between two pieces of the Colonel’s Original Recipe chicken fillets.

Kind of reminds me of the KFC Double Down, which made its debut in Australia last year. The Kentucky Chicken Rice Sandwich is on sale for 450 yen (USD$4.80).

This is what the sandwich looks like:

The KFC Chicken Rice Sandwich comes wrapped in paper

Looks a bit of a mess but is pretty tasty

A good look at the ketchup rice, tomato sauce, mayo and cheese

At first sight it looks like a pile of mess and doesn't look too appetizing. It is also quite expensive at 450 yen. How does it taste? It tastes pretty good and I liked the flavour combinations, but it is very high in carbs. I don’t know how you are meant to eat it as a sandwich as it’s quite messy. I ended up eating it all separately with my hands.

The Kentucky Chicken Rice Sandwich is only available in Japan until February 27th.

I’m interested to hear from you guys what you think of it. Have you tried it or would you be willing to give it a try?
