BBQ Chicken Burger

The BBQ Chicken burger contains fried onions, yellow mustard mayonnaise sauce, spicy barbeque sauce, lettuce and a crispy chicken fillet.

Both burgers come in Golden Brown buns coated with sesame seeds.

We tried the BBQ Beef Burger and it was pretty good. Reminded me of the recent Texas Burger but on a smaller scale.

The BBQ Beef Burgers costs 340 yen (USD$3.50) for just the burger, or 640 yen (USD$6.50) for a Medium Set.

The BBQ Chicken Burger costs 330 yen (USD$3.40) for just the burger, or 630 yen (USD$6.40) for a Medium Set.

Note: Prices may vary depending on the region in Japan

McDonald’s Japan also has a special campaign going, where if you purchase a Large value set you can get a FREE French Fries Holder. It is made to fit any cup holder, so you can use it in your car or on your bike.

TeriTama Burger

The TeriTama Burger is back at McDonald’s Japan. TeriTama is short for Teriyaki Tamago. The burger contains a Teriyaki pork patty with Tamago (egg in Japanese), lettuce, and sweet lemon sauce. There is also a TeriTama Cheese Burger, which features the addition of cheese. The burger has been available since March 22nd and costs 310 yen (USD$3.30) for the regular TeriTama or 340 yen (USD$3.60) for the TeriTama Cheese. A Medium set will cost you 620 yen (USD$6.60) for the regular TeriTama and 650 yen (USD$6.90) for a TeriTama Cheese set. Prices vary depending on the region in Japan.

TeriTama with Cheese
How does it taste? Pretty good! The Teriyaki sauce is really sweet and sticky and goes well with the pork, egg and cheese in the burger. I would recommend you give this one a try if you are in Japan around this time of the year. The TeriTama will remain on the menu until the end of April.

This Friday (April 5th), they also released the Chicken TeriTama, which features a piece of Teriyaki Chicken. They have used the same chicken as the Juicy Chicken Fillet Burger and covered it with sweet Teriyaki sauce. I just tried it and it is definitely my favourite. The chicken is crispy on the outside and juicy in the middle. The Chicken TeriTama is 330 yen (USD$3.40) for just the burger itself, or 640 yen (USD$6.60) for a Medium set.

Kentucky Chicken Rice Sandwich

The Kentucky Chicken Rice Sandwich went on sale at KFC in Japan on February 7th. The bun less sandwich features ketchup rice, cheddar cheese special tomato sauce, and special mayonnaise sandwiched between two pieces of the Colonel’s Original Recipe chicken fillets.

Kind of reminds me of the KFC Double Down, which made its debut in Australia last year. The Kentucky Chicken Rice Sandwich is on sale for 450 yen (USD$4.80).

This is what the sandwich looks like:

The KFC Chicken Rice Sandwich comes wrapped in paper

Looks a bit of a mess but is pretty tasty

A good look at the ketchup rice, tomato sauce, mayo and cheese

At first sight it looks like a pile of mess and doesn't look too appetizing. It is also quite expensive at 450 yen. How does it taste? It tastes pretty good and I liked the flavour combinations, but it is very high in carbs. I don’t know how you are meant to eat it as a sandwich as it’s quite messy. I ended up eating it all separately with my hands.

The Kentucky Chicken Rice Sandwich is only available in Japan until February 27th.

I’m interested to hear from you guys what you think of it. Have you tried it or would you be willing to give it a try?

• 2 garlic cloves, finely grated
• 2cm knob ginger, finely grated
• 1 tsp sugar
• sea salt and pepper
• 3 Tbsp vegetable oil

• 2 Tbsp mirin (Japanese rice wine)
• 1 Tbsp rice vinegar
• 3 Tbsp mayonnaise
• 1 tsp chilli sauce

• 8 soft lettuce leaves
• ½ cucumber, finely sliced
• 2 small tomatoes, sliced

Method

1. Mix the beef, using your hands, with 2 Tbsp soy sauce, sesame oil, egg, green onions, garlic, ginger, sugar, salt and pepper. Form into patties and refrigerate for an hour.
2. Heat 2 Tbsp vegetable oil in a frying pan and cook onions over a medium heat for 10 minutes, tossing well until softened.
3. Add remaining soy, mirin and vinegar to the pan and cook 5-10 minutes more until golden brown. Set aside.
4. Whisk mayonnaise and chilli sauce together.
5. Brush burger patties with remaining vegetable oil and grill or pan fry over a medium heat for about 4 minutes on each side, until browned.
6. Split burger buns and lightly grill.
7. Top base buns with lettuce leaves and burger patties. Add a spoonful of chilli mayonnaise and top with soy onions and sesame seeds.
8. Arrange lettuce, cucumber and tomato on remaining bun tops alongside and serve.
